Common voice-related problems

Our voice is important because it’s part of our personality and is essential for communications. Even today, in the age of digital communications, the loss of one’s voice can be a significant social problem.

The most common problems with the voice are:

Aphonia is a complete loss of the voice and hoarseness is more of a change in the voice, becoming deeper and duller.

Besides these specific voice-related problems, aphonia and hoarseness can also be associated with a sore throat, itchiness, a tickly cough, burning, coughing and if there is an underlying disease, fever, phlegm and general discomfort.

The causes or risk factors that facilitate the onset of voice loss are:

  • Misuse of the voice. In particular, shouting or whispering, which can cause irritation of the mucous membrane.

  • Diseases of the upper airways that produce mucus and irritation, such as pharyngitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis…

  • Smoke-filled or polluted environments, which dry the throat and contribute to itchiness.

  • Very hot environments where a lack of humidity and the dilation of vocal chords prevents the clean exhalation of air.

  • Significant cold, which contracts vocal chords and soft tissues.

  • Breathing through the mouth, which prevents air from heating up and allows pollution to enter the throat directly.

  • Excessive noise that forces you to strain your voice when speaking.

  • Stress, anxiety or anger, which produces a contraction of the larynx and encourages you to shout more.

  • Handling of the throat due to surgical intubation.

  • Or just never shutting up. Whether at work or at play

Natural remedies to cure loss of voice

  • Lemon tea with honey. Lemon is antiseptic and honey works like an antihistamine.

  • Hot water with lemon. Right after you get up in the morning. Its antiseptic properties and vitamin C will protect your throat.

  • Sugar and onion syrup. Boil the onion and add sugar to the broth. This has antibacterial properties and soothes coughs at night.

  • Ginger. This is very popular for throat complaints thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. Take either in tea or grated.

  • Gargle with salt water. The water should be lukewarm. This is an anti-inflammatory remedy, while salt is antiseptic.

  • Gargle with lemon and bicarbonate of soda. Granny’s home remedy. As mentioned, lemon is antiseptic and bicarbonate of soda flushes out bacteria and refreshes the breath.

Throat and vocal chord care.

  1. Avoid drinking very hot or very cold drinks. This will prevent damage to the mmucous membrane.

  2. Don’t drink alcohol to excess. Alcoholic drinks dry out and irritate the larynx.

  3. Don’t smoke. Tobacco smoke burns the tissues and damages the walls of your throat.

  4. Don’t raise your voice. Try to defend your ideas without shouting.

  5. Breathe through your nose. If you do sports, wear a neck gaiter, which helps heat up the air you breathe through your mouth.

  6. When sleeping, the body regains muscle fibre and your cells regenerate, caring for your larynx and vocal chords too.

  7. Avoid enclosed and/ or polluted spaces.

  8. Drink plenty of fluids to keep your mucus membranes hydrated. So if you do get a build up of phlegm, its easier to bring up without hurting yourself coughing.

  9. If you suffer frequent hoarseness in spring, see your allergist. You may have hay fever.

  10. In winter it’s common that AC, excessive heating, and dust irritate your throat. So it’s a good idea to use a humidifier, placing these on radiators, or use steam appliances.
